How to Prototype Using Amazon Alexa and Adobe XD

Adobe’s Amazon Alexa XD plugin and Adobe XD Alexa skill allow you to export your voice prototypes from XD to simulate voice experiences on an Alexa-enabled device (Amazon Echo, Amazon Echo Dot, Amazon Echo Show, etc.). You can design voice prototypes in XD by wiring up artboards and using voice command triggers and speech playback actions. With this XD integration with Amazon Alexa, you can export voice prototypes from XD to Alexa, and access your prototypes simply by saying “Alexa, open Adobe XD” to an Alexa-enabled device with the Adobe XD skill for Alexa enabled. This is helpful for testing and iteration and can be a great asset when communicating voice design ideas and concepts to your team members, clients, and stakeholders.

ENABLE THE ADOBE XD SKILL ON YOUR ALEXA-ENABLED DEVICE

To access your XD prototypes on your Alexa-enabled device, you need to enable the Adobe XD Alexa Skill. You can find and enable the Adobe XD skill in the Alexa Skills Store. Once you have the Adobe XD skill enabled, you will need to connect your Adobe Creative Cloud account. Once you’ve logged into your account, you can open the Adobe XD skill on any of your Alexa-enabled devices by saying “Alexa, open Adobe XD.

VOICE PROTOTYPE IN XD

Using the voice command trigger and speech playback action, you can design your voice prototypes in XD. By wiring up your artboards and selecting voice command as the trigger, you can specify commands that trigger interactions in your experience. Use time as a trigger and set speech playback as an action to have your prototype speak back to you.

EXPORT YOUR XD VOICE PROTOTYPE TO ALEXA

Once you have designed a voice prototype in XD with voice commands and speech playback, you can export it to the Adobe XD skill for Alexa. First, you’ll need to have the Alexa Preview plugin installed in XD. You can install this plugin via the plugin manager here. Select the first artboard of your voice experience (making sure all of your artboards are connected with voice commands and have speech playback actions added to them). The plugin will ask you to give your prototype an invocation name. This will be the name you use when you open your prototype on an Alexa-enabled device.

OPEN YOUR XD PROTOTYPES ON YOUR ALEXA-ENABLED DEVICE

Once the Adobe XD skill is enabled and you’ve started the Adobe XD skill by saying “Alexa, open Adobe XD,” the skill will list out all of your exported prototypes. You can then open any of your projects by saying the name of the prototype. The name of the prototype is the name you entered into the Alexa Preview plugin in XD when exporting your prototype. You can open your prototype within the skill by saying “Alexa, open PROTOTYPE NAME.

Once you’ve opened the prototype, the prototype will start based on the triggers and actions you defined in Adobe XD.
